Economist terms use of alternative energy resources as indispensable to contain import bill of fuel
February 02, 2023

Mirza Ikhtiyar Baig (Economist): The only way to control import bills is to promote solar energy rather than to produce expensive electricity through furnace oil. Every year over 20 billion dollars are spent for the import of LNG and furnace oil resulting in a huge price of electricity for the users. We have to move to renewable energy including wind, solar and nuclear energy. In Turkey a map is never approved until and unless the geysers and electricity is not planned on solar panels. China is a time-tested friend of Pakistan and can play an important role in the power generation sector. At this point of time China is working on four projects including K1, K2, K3 and K4 projects for Pakistan. The cleanest energy with zero carbon emissions is solar energy so there is a dire need that the government must promote solar energy and provide subsidies in this sector.
