UNICEF pledges support for Pakistan’s youth against climate crisis
May 08, 2025

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative in Pakistan, Abdullah Fadil, called on Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Senator Musadik Masood Malik, in Islamabad on Thursday.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the growing climate vulnerabilities affecting children in Pakistan and explored evidence-based policy measures to mitigate their socio-economic impact. They also emphasized enhancing cooperation to shield Pakistan’s children from the worsening consequences of climate change.

Abdullah Fadil highlighted that children remain among the most vulnerable groups exposed to climate-related threats. He stressed the urgent need to build resilience across essential services—particularly in education, health, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)—to protect the well-being and future of Pakistan’s youth.

UNICEF’s ongoing programmes in Pakistan currently benefit nearly six million children nationwide. These initiatives aim to safeguard children's health, support their development, enhance life skills, and empower them to contribute meaningfully to the country’s socio-economic progress.

Senator Musadik Malik appreciated UNICEF’s continued support and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to placing children and youth at the core of the national climate agenda. He underscored the importance of increased investment in youth development, calling for the mobilization of climate finance to implement impactful initiatives across the country.

He said Pakistan’s youth must be equipped to emerge as climate leaders and active contributors to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Earlier, the UNICEF representative congratulated Senator Malik on his recent appointment and expressed hope for strengthened efforts under his leadership to address climate-related challenges, especially those affecting children and essential infrastructure.
