The World Health Organization has warned that the new Omicron variant has been reported in fifty seven countries and number of patients needing hospitalization is likely to rise.

The WHO, in its weekly epidemiological report, said more data is needed to assess the severity of disease caused by the Omicron variant and whether its mutations may reduce protection from vaccine-derived immunity.

It said the Covid cases are rising in southern Africa including Zimbabwe.
