UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for de-escalation in the Gulf region, urging Iran and the United States to promptly resume negotiations.             

Speaking at his daily press briefing, the Secretary General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said this escalation risks derailing the diplomatic progress achieved so far.                 

He said the Secretary General has called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any further escalatory action.
