In New Zealand, at least one person was killed, several injured and others reported missing after a volcano erupted off the east coast of its North Island on Monday, spewing a plume of ash thousands of feet into the air.

Police said that tourists were seen walking inside the rim of the White Island crater just moments before the eruption.

Police said 23 people had been rescued but warned that the number of dead might rise.
