Defence Minister calls for resolving contentious issues through democratic means
June 11, 2026

Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif has called for resolving contentious issues through democratic means and public mandate, saying voters should decide such matters.

Speaking in the National Assembly today in connection with the Kashmir issue and voting rights of Kashmiri refugees, he said both Pakistanis and Kashmiris have made great sacrifices for the cause.

The Minister further said the issue is not only of Kashmiris, but a national cause involving all 250 million Pakistanis.

He, while referring to the hardships faced by Kashmiri refugee families, said many Kashmiris still live in areas known as refugee camps. He said the identity and historical ties of Kashmiris from the Valley and Jammu must be respected.

While reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to the Kashmir cause, Khawaja Asif said Pakistan would continue to support Kashmir for generations.

The Defence Minister urged all political parties to respect the sanctity of Parliament and ensure the smooth functioning of democratic institutions, saying political disputes should not weaken the legislature.

Khawaja Muhammad Asif called for collective efforts to strengthen the Parliament so it can make better decisions for the welfare of the people. He stressed that a robust and empowered parliament is essential for the country's socio-economic development and progress.

Responding to a Calling Attention Notice in the National Assembly, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry said the first phase of the Park Road infrastructure project is on track and will be completed by next month.

He said the work on the project is progressing according to schedule and the second phase will be completed by August this year.

He said, once fully completed, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to significantly ease traffic flow, cutting commuter travel time down to just half an hour.

Meanwhile, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has suspended the membership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Member of the National Assembly, Iqbal Afridi, for the current session of the National Assembly.

In his ruling, the Speaker emphasized that the use of abusive language and aggressive behaviour with the lower-grade staff of the august House is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said maintaining the sanctity and discipline of the Parliament, as well as protecting the dignity of its employees, remains a priority.

The House will now meet again tomorrow at 3 p.m.
