Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has reaffirmed the government's commitment to addressing Pakistan's population challenge through coordinated and evidence-based measures.

In a statement on World Population Day, he said Pakistan's future depends not on the size of its population but on the quality, productivity and preparedness of its people.

He said Pakistan's fertility rate has declined to 3.6 births per woman, but the pace remains insufficient.

He warned that the population, which reached 241.49 million in the 2023 Digital Census, could exceed 386 million by 2050 if current trends continue, increasing pressure on resources and public services.

Ahsan Iqbal said the National Population Council, chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, will help ensure coordinated efforts among federal and provincial institutions to address the challenge.

He said population stabilization is essential for harnessing the demographic dividend through improved healthcare, girls' education, women's economic participation, skills development and job creation.

Referring to ‘URAAN Pakistan’, the Minister said the government's focus is to transform population growth into an opportunity by developing healthier, educated and productive citizens.

He said the country's large youth population is a major asset that requires investment in health, education, skills development and women's empowerment.

The Minister called for collective efforts by all stakeholders to promote responsible parenthood, youth empowerment and sustainable development.
