7.6 magnitude earthquake strikes off eastern Papua New Guinea

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake has struck off eastern Papua New Guinea, causing damage to buildings and spreading panic among residents.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 61 kilometres about 67 kilometres from the eastern town of Kainantu on Sunday.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Meanwhile, an earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck islands in western Indonesia on Sunday, causing some property damage.
