A historian stressed that Europe must see to the world that it is not running away from its responsibilities.

Nusrat Syed, a researcher on Afghan refugees in the Netherlands, said European countries were now reluctant to grant political asylum to Afghans whose country had invested billions in security.

Another resesrcher said that thousands of Afghans were expected to be resettled in the United States, political figures are using the issue of new refugees as a political weapon against each other.
