The United Nations Security Council's Western members have condemned Belarus for escalating crisis over migrants stranded on its border with Poland.

In a joint statement issued after UNSC meeting in New York, Estonia, France, Ireland, Norway, the UK, the US and Albania called for a strong international reaction over Belarus' maltreatment with migrants.

They accused Belarus of using the migrants to destabilize the European Union's eastern border, describing its approach 'unacceptable'.

Earlier, Belarus has threatened to stop gas supplies to Europe if new sanctions were imposed.
