At the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan has described the ceasefire between the Houthis and the United States as a positive development.
Delivering the national statement during the Security Council briefing on Yemen, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad reaffirmed support to peaceful resolution of crisis in Yemen through dialogue and diplomacy.
He also called the ceasefire between the US and the Houthis a diplomatic breakthrough and a chance to further intra-Yemeni dialogue.
Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN said this opportunity must not be squandered and it should be used to advance an inclusive, intra-Yemeni political process.
He reaffirmed Pakistan's strong commitment to a peaceful, political resolution of the Yemeni conflict.
The Pakistan's UN Ambassador stressed that only a Yemeni-owned, Yemeni-led political process facilitated by the United Nations can provide a credible and lasting path to peace, adding that Pakistan fully supports such a process.
The Special envoy Hans Grundberg, Under-Secretary-General of the UN Tom Fletcher, and Ms. Dina El Mamoun gave comprehensive briefings to the Security Council members on Yemen issue.
While welcoming the diplomatic efforts being made by Saudi Arabia and Oman to resolve the crisis, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar called on all parties to honor the December 2023 Roadmap, exercise maximum restraint and prioritize diplomacy.
He also drew attention of the Security Council to the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza, linking it to broader regional instability, including recent escalations in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad expressed Pakistan's unwavering solidarity with the people of Yemen in their quest for peace, stability and prosperity.
He urged the international community and the UN Security Council to remain actively engaged to prevent further deterioration and to help pave the way for a peaceful future for Yemen.
