Afghanistan: Taliban regime facing growing criticism over education policies
July 15, 2026

In Afghanistan, the Taliban regime is facing growing criticism over its education policies.

Media reports indicated that, after imposing sweeping restrictions on women, it has also deprived Afghan youth of their fundamental right to education.

According to international publication, The Guardian, UNESCO has identified a sharp decline in the number of students enrolled in higher education under Taliban rule.

The publication also reported that the plight of students studying under Taliban control has received little attention at international forums, while the departure of experienced professors has led to a significant decline in the quality of higher education across Afghanistan.

Citing an Afghan student, The Guardian said students face brutal punishment for violating the Taliban's strict regulations on beards and dress code.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said the Taliban regime has committed serious human rights violations by depriving millions of Afghans of their fundamental rights.

According to The Guardian, the Taliban's policies are aimed at crippling educational institutions and undermining the future of Afghanistan's younger generation.

Indian journalist Dharm Jyot said the Taliban regime's strict restrictions on education and employment amount to a severe violation of the Afghan people's fundamental rights.

Critics say the Taliban regime has become one of the clearest examples of widespread human rights violations in Afghanistan.
