Pakistan secures global recognition for basmati rice ownership
February 19, 2025

New Zealand and Australia have officially recognized Basmati rice as a Pakistani product, with the European Union expected to make similar decision in favor of Pakistan.

This recognition not only reaffirms Pakistan’s heritage in cultivating high-quality Basmati rice but also strengthens its position in the global market.

Pakistan's Basmati rice is globally recognized for its superior aroma, quality, and competitive pricing, leading to a surge in exports.  As a result, the country’s rice exports have surged to an impressive four billion dollars, solidifying Pakistan’s standing as a dominant force in the global rice industry of 27 billion dollars.

India, which was disturbed by Pakistan's rising exports, tried to control the basmati rice trade, but its efforts remained counterproductive. Exporters have revealed that India does not produce original Basmati rice.

According to the data released by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), India did not export a single grain of Basmati rice before 1965, while Pakistan has been exporting Basmati rice to Europe and Gulf countries since the 1960s.

Trade experts and historians have provided strong evidence that Basmati rice originates from Pakistan's Hafizabad region, debunking India's efforts to assert control over its global trade.

Trade expert Shams-ul-Islam has emphasized that while the European Union’s decision has faced some delays, intellectual property laws protect Pakistan’s claim to the geographical indication (GI) certification. He asserted that India's objections hold no merit, and Pakistan rightfully deserves official recognition as the true home of Basmati rice.

With strong international backing and increasing exports, Pakistan continues to cement its dominance in the global Basmati rice market, ensuring that its farmers and traders benefit from fair trade policies and international recognition.
