Analysts call upon world to help Pakistan tackle the challenges of climate change
September 20, 2022

Hammad Naqi Khan (CEO, WWF): The ongoing UN general Assembly session is very important. As far as the Paris Agreement on climate change is concerned, it does not cover the challenges faced by developing countries like Pakistan. However, the United Nations is the right forum to address this issue. The amendments in the Paris accord will not be made so quickly. But the developing world must keep highlighting the impacts of climate change. The remarks made by the General Secretary of the United Nations are very important that Pakistan and other hotspots of climate change disaster are paying the price for the developed countries' massive greenhouse gas emissions. It is unfortunate that in the past similar remarks were also made by the UN officials but no practical measures have been taken in this regard.

Najam us Saqib (Former Ambassador): The UN session is held every year but this time the session is crucial as Pakistan will highlight some immediate issues that need the world's attention. The main and top most agenda of the UN will be the climate change that has impacted Pakistan badly in the form of heavy floods. Some friendly countries have been supporting Pakistan through financial assistance. We have to convey to the world that Pakistan has a very minimal role in global carbon emissions yet it is paying a heavy price due to climate change. We have to wait and see the outcomes of the appeal of the UN General Secretary regarding the aid to the flood hit people in Pakistan. The Prime Minister in his address at the UN General Assembly and during his side line meetings will highlight the sufferings of people in Pakistan due to flood calamity.
