Analysts hail robust and long-term relations between Pakistan and the European Union
September 20, 2022

Mirza Ikhtiyar Baig (Economist): The European Union is a 27 countries bloc and second largest importer of Pakistani products, mainly in the textile sector. The European Union has also granted GSP Plus status to Pakistan as per which our exports to these countries will be duty free. Now the same status is going to expire by the end of the next year. The meeting of Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa with the Ambassador of the European Union Dr Riina Kionka is very important in enhancing Pak, EU relations. The bilateral ties and trade of Pakistan with the European Union must be on top of agenda. At this point of time, the cordial and stronger relations between Pakistan and the European Union are need of the hour.

Dr. Aamer Raza (IR Expert): Generally our approach towards the European Union is considered as an extension of Pakistan's relations with the United States. But the fact is that there is a difference between the thinking of the US and the EU. After the illegal and unilateral move of the Indian government to change the demography of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the European Union expressed concerns over this act and would hold India responsible if there are any consequences. Moreover, after the withdrawal of the US and its allies from Afghanistan we have not observed notable US engagement in the war torn country. On the other hand, the European Union is willing to play its part in rehabilitation efforts in Afghanistan. The European Union is considered a hub of exports of Pakistani products. Pakistan was granted GSP Plus status by the European Union that helped the country to increase its exports.
