The thirty-sixth death anniversary of Punjabi folk singer Tufail Niazi was observed today (Monday).

Tufail Niazi was born in 1926 in Madiraan village of Jalandhar district. After Pakistan came into being, he first settled in Multan and then moved to Lahore.

Tufail Niazi began his artistic journey with Nautanki theatre productions, starring in iconic classical plays such as Sassi Pannu, Heer Ranjha, and Sohni Mahiwal, before transitioning to a singing career with his own Sangeet Party.

He sang many memorable songs for Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television.

In the 1970s, he became associated with Lok Virsa. He sang in the famous television programme “Lok Tamasha” and also composed melodies for songs performed by others.

Tufail Niazi also received the Presidential Pride of Performance Award.

He died on this day in 1990 in Islamabad.
