Analysts call for immediate ceasefire to end violence in Afghanistan
April 23, 2021

Dr Khurram Iqbal (Expert on International Relations): Pakistan is trying to mobilize regional support for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process. It is high time for Pakistan to ensure that Afghanistan does not indulge into civil war after the withdrawal of international troops. Islamabad is taking corrective measures to include regional powers to resolve Afghan crisis peacefully. Pakistan's role in Afghan peace has been acknowledged by the world powers. Despite having limited resources, we have been hosting a large number of Afghan refugees for the last many decades. These Afghan refugees are enjoying all rights and privileges like other citizens of Pakistan. It is very important to invest more on Afghan refugees to make them ambassadors of Pakistan when they return to their country. Pakistan has suffered a lot due to Afghan war. Islamabad has always called upon the international community to take steps for safe return of refugees.

Lieutenant General, retired, Asif Yaseen Malik (Defence Analyst): It is a diplomatic victory of Pakistan that the world powers have endorsed Pakistan's stance regarding peace in Afghanistan. Islamabad has always pursued effective diplomacy for durable peace in Afghanistan. The US should not link withdrawal of its troops with the September 11 episode as it is a sensitive issue. Pakistan is pursuing a proactive diplomacy for regional peace. Islamabad would do its best to convince the Taliban to participate in the Ankara Conference. Afghan refugees are scattered all over Pakistan. Political stability in Afghanistan is imperative for safe return of Afghan refugees. Peaceful Afghanistan is in the best interest of the entire region, including Pakistan.

Dr. Hassan Abbas Zaheer (Health Expert): There has been an immediate surge in Covid-19 cases in Pakistan, which is a worrisome situation. The third wave of Coronavirus seems very dangerous. The PTI-led government deserves appreciation for chalking out an effective strategy to curb coronavirus in the country. The government has sought assistance from the Pakistan Army to implement coronavirus SOPs across the country.  The Pakistan Army always played a crucial role during crises and challenges faced by the nation. I would also appeal to the general public to strictly follow coronavirus-related SOPs to stay safe from this deadly disease.
