Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set the illustrative price of wheat at 4,500 rupees per 40 kilograms for 2027 to provide relief to farmers and encourage an increase in domestic wheat production.
According to the Prime Minister's Office, the proposed price represents an increase of 1,000 rupees per 40 kilograms compared to the 3,500 rupees fixed last year.
The Prime Minister said the increase aims to provide relief to farmers in view of rising production costs, higher petroleum prices and inflationary pressures.
He said the decision is intended to encourage farmers to cultivate wheat by helping them recover their production costs and earn a reasonable profit.
Shehbaz Sharif said farmers had faced financial difficulties in recent years due to inflation and rising agricultural input costs, while Pakistan had also been required to import wheat over the past two years.
He expressed confidence that the proposed price would encourage farmers to cultivate more wheat in the coming season, thereby increasing domestic production and strengthening the country's food security.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the guidance of President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N Quaid Muhammad Nawaz Sharif during the consultative process.
He also appreciated Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her cooperation and valuable suggestions and thanked Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for his support.
The initiative is expected to contribute to farmers' economic well-being, strengthen the agricultural economy and help make the country more self-sufficient in meeting its food requirements.
