Afghan govt needs to take immediate actions against TTP & follow Doha agreement
July 24, 2024

Lt. General (Rtd) Raza Muhammad Khan (Senior Defense Analyst): There has to be combination of approaches from Pakistani side in regard of the negotiations, there is no harm to continue every kind of negotiations. These negotiations must go on, they have been going on in the past. But simultaneously others measures, other advantages and disadvantages must be a part of our counter terrorism response. We are aware that Pakistan has given every kind of support to Afghanistan, whether it is political or diplomatic support internationally, locally and regionally. It has also sometimes given a preferred status for trade while millions of Afghans refugees have also been hosted by Pakistan. These are the incentives which are already in place but these incentives could be converted to disincentives if the dialogue fails rather there could be other disincentives included like trade sanctions and some kind of border closures. But that should be the last resort. Terms has to be put in place that if there is any kind of attacks and invasions or there are efforts to hurt the stability than all those responsible should be punished instantly. I think we had made it very clear that this should be our policy and it was as it could be recalled in the case of Indian attack on Balakot and Iran in Balochistan. The Pakistan response is immediate and instant. I'm sure the government of Pakistan has all options available they are on the table and whenever needed by the political leadership, the armed forces can execute that option to re-maintain or reestablish deterrence in addition to the defensive measures that are in place through national action plan and partially by provincial action plans.

When it comes to anti-terror efforts, the Afghan government is proving to be a disappointment because there are some very clear reasons for that. First reason is TTP has their allegiance to the present Afghan government. There is a perception in the incumbent Afghan government that because TTP helped them in the past therefor Afghan government is not taking necessary and appropriate action against them which is very disappointing and spoiling relations not only of Afghanistan with Pakistan but also relations with China, Iran and many others. I think they need to have a relook at this policy which they are following. I think the Afghan government needs to take immediate actions against TTP and all their affiliates and they should demonstrate to the Pakistan and the world that they are serious about following the Doha agreement and not allowing their territory against Pakistan or any other country.

Brig. (Rtd) Babar Allauddin (Defense Analyst): On media and other forums, daily a topic is being discussed that Pakistan over the terrorist activities, is repeatedly protesting and reminding Afghanistan government about the issue through different channels but the situation is not getting better despite the fact Pakistan in the past helped Afghan people even TTA for reestablishing their relations with international community.

Unfortunately, the Afghan territory for the past four decades or more, remained the epicenter for such activities due to which people of Afghanistan have suffered the most. Despite the history of helping Afghans by Pakistan, Pakistan keeps reminding the Afghan government about the issue but they do not care and are not fulfilling their responsibility.

Pakistani citizens and officers and personnel of armed forces are spilling their blood due to terrorism and like every country, Pakistan have the right to self-defense and there are many other options for Pakistan in this regard but we are exhibiting our patience and not resorting to extreme measures. Afghan government still have time to fulfill its responsibilities by stopping terrorists from entering Pakistan, dismantle their training camps and logistics and talk to their supporters present in the interim Afghan government and warn them about the consequences.
