Prominent international daily The Washington Post says arrest and prosecution of a climate activist in India puts question on the very claim by the country of being world's largest democracy.                                            

In an opinion piece, the paper termed the arrest of young activist Disha Ravi, part of Modi government's consistent policy of suppressing dissent and freedom of speech.                           

The paper writes that new farm laws that triggered farmers' protests, controversial citizenship laws and change in special status of disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir are all evidence of Indian government's total disregard for democratic values and drift towards autocracy.
