Value-addition of horticulture production crucial to boost exports: President

President Dr Arif Alvi says value-addition of horticulture produce is crucial for Pakistan to boost its exports and get an edge in the highly competitive international market.

Addressing a seminar on 'Trade Potential of Pakistan Citrus - From Roots to Trade Routes' in Islamabad on Sunday.

The President said it is important for the country to enhance quality of local fresh fruit with improved packaging and preservation to attract high-end markets.

The President said Pakistan is the world's sixth largest producer of superior quality Kinnow and there is a need of an effective policy to broaden the scope of exports.

Dr Arif Alvi said Pakistani embassies and missions abroad can play an important role in introducing country's fruits to the taste-buds of consumers across the world by organizing festivals particularly of Kinnow, mangoes and apricots.

The President visited the stalls of citrus fruits with a variety of Kinnows and lauded the efforts of Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and Sargodha Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Minister for Science and Technology  Chaudhary Fawad Hussain  and Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Zulfiqar Hussain Bukhari were also present on the occasion.
