Following the successful conduct of the first phase of the general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) resorted to violence.

According to Azad Jammu and Kashmir Police, members of the proscribed organization attempted to march towards Rawalakot. When they were stopped by law enforcement personnel, they opened fire.

The police said the banned JAAC also attacked a security post on the outskirts of Rawalakot.

During the attack on law enforcement personnel, Rangers Sepoy Ali Raza embraced martyrdom, while three policemen sustained injuries. The mob also set ablaze one vehicle each belonging to the Rangers and the police.

According to the police, the violent incidents, including attacks on law enforcement personnel and acts of arson, were aimed at sabotaging the successful electoral process.

Despite severe provocation, law enforcement agencies exercised maximum restraint and professionalism while responding to the situation.

The police said the attacks on government officials, public property and security forces exposed the violent intentions of the proscribed JAAC.

They reaffirmed that the writ of the state would be maintained at all costs and that all those involved in violence, arson and attacks on security personnel would be brought to justice.

The public has been urged to avoid rumours and misleading propaganda and to rely only on verified information.
