High time to enhance bilateral trade between Pakistan and Sri Lanka

Fauzia Nasreen (Former Ambassador): Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are located in South Asia and enjoy strong bilateral trade and economic relations. Pakistan is the second largest trading partner of Sri Lanka in South Asia. Sri Lanka was the first country to sign a Free Trade Agreement with Pakistan, which became operational from June 12, 2005. Sri Lanka always supported Pakistan’s stance on host of issues. There is a need for expanding Free Trade Agreement to enhance bilateral trade between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a flagship programme of Belt and Road Initiative of China and the entire region can benefit from this project for the promotion of economic activities. Enhancing connectivity between Gwadar Port and Sri Lankan ports will help provide easy access to business centers of Central Asian states. Both the countries should continue common efforts for promotion of bilateral cooperation in the sectors of trade, investment, health, education, agriculture, science and technology and other fields of mutual interest.
