Analysts appreciate Pakistan’s abiding commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan
September 09, 2021

Jalil Abbas Jillani (Former Ambassador): Pakistan's position stands vindicated as it had been suggesting for a long time that the solution to Afghan crisis lied in dialogue and internal political consensus among all stakeholders. Now, the world has realized that Pakistan's approach was more pragmatic.  The international community should support the Taliban to help them stabilize their country. The economic situation in Afghanistan is quite precarious. The international community should provide massive humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. A number of countries are willing to support the new dispensation in Afghanistan. There is a need to change the narrative about the Taliban, which will take some time. Many countries have already realized that Taliban are a reality and they need to engage with them.

Dr. Khurram Iqbal (IR Expert): There are significant signs that things are getting settled. The Taliban leadership is showing that they are not the same as they used to be in the 1990s. The composition of their cabinet should have been more inclusive. Apparently, this is a transitional set up and Taliban might expand the size and include new faces in the final arrangement. There are high hopes that Afghanistan will continue to succeed and achieve stability. Pakistan will consult the regional countries before recognition of the new government in Kabul. The regional countries want a more inclusive set up in Kabul. Pakistan is certainly promoting regionalism in South Asia, CARs and beyond. Why it did not happen in the past is because of the presence of a hegemon in the region. Now, new power centers are emerging and they are supportive of Islamabad. With the help and support of regional countries, Pakistan's ambition for regional connectivity can be achieved more effectively.

Brig. (Retd.) Haris Nawaz (Defence Analyst): These are very important visits, which are related to the evolving situation in Afghanistan. Possibly, the US wanted the Indian government to host a few Afghans, but New Delhi has declined to help in this regard. The leadership in Pakistan has talked about the emerging situation in Afghanistan. Pakistan has shared its apprehensions about Indian negative role in Afghanistan. There is peace in the whole of Afghanistan now. The Taliban have sent a very positive message worldwide. On its part, Pakistan has made a lot of effort to help evacuate and transport Americans and other foreigners living in Afghanistan, which must be appreciated.
