People staged protest against India’s controversial citizenship law in South Africa
January 11, 2020

In Cape Town, South Africa, people staged protest against India’s controversial citizenship law, which critics claim could turn the country’s minorities into second-class citizens.

Outside India's consulate General in Cape Town, Protest organizer Rehana Khan Parker demanded New Delhi to immediately revoke three discriminatory legislations including the Citizenship Amendment Act, the National Register of Citizens and the Transgender Persons Act.

On the other hand, according to an official notification of the Indian Home Affairs Ministry, despite widespread opposition and protests, the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act came into effect on Friday.

Meanwhile, thousands of people have been protesting across India since December eleventh to oppose the new citizenship law backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
