Analysts appreciate role of national institutions during COVID-19 pandemic
April 13, 2020

Ali Muhammad Khan (Minister of States for Parliamentary Affairs):

I would like to applaud the stakeholders including paramedical staff, doctors, police, Pak Army and Radio Pakistan that have been performing national duties during the COVID-19 pandemic. The best cure of Coronavirus is to restrict ourselves and maintain social distancing and adopting other precautionary measures. Normally, those people are more prone to the disease who are older as their immune system becomes weak. Moreover, the younger when go back to their homes after remaining outside and if they do not follow the precautionary guidelines issued by the health department regarding disinfection then they are definitely putting the lives of their family members at stake. I am confident that Pakistan will be able to get rid of this pandemic very soon and once the COVID-19 issue is over, Pakistan will become a more vigilant country. Prime Minister is very anxious and worried about the condition of poor segment of society including daily wagers and labors in current situation. Due to this reason, the government has never supported the complete lock-down in the country.

Dr. Khurram Iqbal (IR Expert):

COVID-19 has impacted the life and most particularly the education system. The digitalization of education in Pakistan is gaining popularity likewise in developed countries of the world. I strongly believe that COVID-19 has transformed the education sector throughout the world. For the survival of higher education in the country it is mandatory to focus on digitalization. One of the major challenges in Pakistan is that students are not prepared for digitalization as it is new to them. We need to improve the internet services. China must be followed as role model because after the outbreak of COVID-19, China totally moved towards digitalization. The teachers must have to adopt innovative teaching methodology to develop the interest of the students in complying with digitalization.

Dr. Mumtaz Ali Khan (Focal Person, NIH):

So far over 5000 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the country. Most of the cases are in Punjab and minimum cases are in AJK. The situation in Islamabad is under control. The overall deaths due to Coronavirus are 86 in the country. Flu is not the symptoms of Coronavirus; it is the symptom of pollen allergy. This season the intensity of pollen is not higher. No country in the world was prepared for COVID-19. Pakistan is under-developed country yet the government has taken a number of initiatives to control the spreading of this pandemic disease. We have established 22-23 corona testing labs. Another positive development is that in Pakistan corona report is prepared in 24 hours whereas the same report even in developed countries takes 6 to 7 days. The government is committed to improve the testing capacity up to 20,000 tests per day.

Dr. Athar Mehboob (VC Islamia University, Bahawalpur):

Everyone should seek opportunities from the challenges. The process of education in divided into three segments in prevailing situation. Firstly, the availability of learning material in form of bundles is ensured to reach every student. Secondly, there must be student-teacher interaction through WhatsApp, text messaging, email and learning management system. The student in case of queries can contact the concerned teachers using any mode. Thirdly, the assessment of the student will be judged through online testing if the current situation prevails for long. Despite of COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown situation in the country, the continuation of education must be ensured at all costs. We are in touch with our students and teachers are always available for their counseling.

Abdullah Gul (Defense Analyst):

Whenever there is a crisis in the country, the nation has always responded in a positive way and remains dedicated to serve the humanity. The Prime Minister has urged the world powers to pay special attention on the developing countries. The loans should be waived off or the markup should be waived. The situation in 2005 earthquake cannot be compared with the current situation. Many companies are not firing their employees that means every segment is trying to facilitate the people. The people are distributing the Rashan to the deserving families on their own. Prime Minister has ability for fund raising and people should actively participate in PM's Corona Relief Fund. Keeping in view the present situation, all the political parties should be united and put behind the political differences for the sake of national interests.

Faisal Edhi (Chairman of Edhi Foundation):

Edhi foundation has deposited 10 million rupees in Prime Minister Corona Relief fund and I would also like to request the elite class to participate as much as possible in order to facilitate the people of the country. It is unfortunate that this time people are not contributing as they used to do in past. This pandemic disease will have its impact on the economy of the country for over two or three years. The government is making serious efforts to provide relief to the deserving people in current situation and everyone should have to play his part and support the government in this regard.
