Voting right to overseas Pakistanis will strengthen democracy in the country: Analysts
November 18, 2021

Dr. Rasheed Ahmed Khan (IR Expert): Overseas Pakistanis are the assets of our country and have been contributing to our economy through their remittances. The present government has taken yet another great initiative of introducing a digital portal in order to facilitate the overseas Pakistanis for attestation of power of attorney. The people, who go abroad to work, always try to build a house in Pakistan, for which they have big problems and the biggest problem is the occupation groups sitting here. This step will boost the confidence of the overseas Pakistanis who want to invest in Pakistan.

Dr. Huma Baqai (IR Expert): A huge Pakistani diaspora is serving in many countries across the globe and playing a vital role in economic development of the country through their remittances. There was a dire need to engage with the overseas Pakistanis and should have done so long ago. The incumbent government has directed the ambassadors in different countries to regain the lost touch with the younger generation to achieve foreign policy objectives and improve the country’s image. The present government is taking all out measures to facilitate the overseas Pakistani and engage them in the country's interests. Giving the right to vote to overseas Pakistanis and launching a digital portal for them for attestation of power of attorney are the positive developments.

Abdullah Gul (Defense Analyst): The United States signed an agreement with the Afghan Taliban and agreed to remove the Afghan Taliban name from the list of terrorist organizations. Now as the Afghan Taliban are in power in Afghanistan, it is totally unfair that the United States freeze the assets of the Afghan nation. Depriving a nation from its legal assets is a clear violation of international laws. If the uncertainty prevails for a long period of time, the neighborhood of the war-torn country will be in deep trouble as there will be a flux of Afghan people to the neighboring countries. It is high time that the United States must understand the sensitivity of the issue and release the funds of Afghanistan. It is the time that the world must engage with the new Afghan government and support the Afghan people in order to avert any humanitarian crises. The United Nations and OIC need to play a pro-active role and urge the international community to come forward and support the Afghan government for the sake of regional peace and stability.

Naveed Akbar (Senior Analyst): Pakistan is time and again urging the world to support the new Afghan government in order to avert any humanitarian crises. The winter season is coming ahead and that will increase the difficulties for the newly formed Afghan government. If the international community is not serious about the Afghan situation yet then it will not affect regional security but the entire world will face the consequences. At this point of time, there are ominous signs that Afghanistan is heading for a humanitarian catastrophe. The UN General Secretary has warned of a serious possibility of an economic collapse if the international community did not come to the rescue of an impoverished Afghan population. Pakistan at its end is committed for humanitarian aid to Afghan people but Pakistan solely can do nothing. If the situation in Kabul worsens, then the entire world will be at stake so timely measures in this regard are mandatory.
