Pakistanis in US hail grant of voting rights to expatriates

Pakistani-Americans have enthusiastically welcomed the passage of a bill to grant the right of vote to overseas Pakistanis in the next general elections.

In an interview with APP, the head of American-Pakistani Political Action Committee, Dr Ijaz Ahmad, welcomed the decision made for overseas Pakistanis to have the right to vote through an internet-based voting system.  

He said this has been a long, overdue promise that allows overseas Pakistani to stay engaged with their country politically.

Asad Chaudhry, a board member of APPAC, also welcomed the Parliamentary approval of the bill which he described as “historic.” He said overseas Pakistanis will continue to play the positive role they have all along been engaged in.

The secretary-general of Pakistan USA Freedom Forum, in a statement, thanked the PTI-led coalition for the initiative to grant right of franchise to overseas Pakistanis.

He said the Pakistani expatriates will contribute through their votes to the strengthening of democracy in their homeland.
