Pak-Afghan cooperation, zone of opportunity for regional development
May 27, 2021

Experts on International Relations say Pak-Afghan cooperation can turn the region into a zone of opportunity, trade, commerce and transit.

They were expressing their views in a webinar on "Future of Afghanistan: Implications and Options for Pakistan", organized by the Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies in Islamabad.

The speakers from the US, Afghanistan and Pakistan evaluated the emerging complex dynamics within Afghanistan and impacts on Pakistan's politics, security, and economy.

Former Advisor to Afghan President Dr Torek Farhadi said they should understand that civil war, after peaceful withdrawal of foreign troops, would not benefit anyone.

Retired Lieutenant General Ishfaq Nadeem Ahmad said Pak-Afghan agreement needs to be put in place along with an agreement by supporting states willing to support Kabul, post-US departure.

Former Foreign Secretary and Director CASS Ambassador (Retired) Jalil Abbas Jilani said it is imperative for Islamabad to continue to display the same level of commitment towards Afghanistan's peace and stability.

Deputy President CASS Air Marshal (Retired) Farhat Hussain Khan stressed that failure to achieve stability in Afghanistan would have serious implications on Pakistan's economic and internal security.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, Director Nuclear and Strategic Affairs Syed Muhammad Ali said the international community, regional powers, and Afghan stakeholders should learn from costly conflict history and work to prevent its adverse consequences for the region.
