Dr. Mirza Ikhtiyar Baig (Economic Expert): Finance Minister rightly said that Pakistan needs export-led growth, which is a very pragmatic idea. Historically, there used to be a difference in exports and imports, and imports outpaced exports. The only way out is to increase exports. We need to diversify our products and markets, and need to look toward the African markets to get better prices. We should compete with the regional and global markets. To increase foreign reserves, we should focus on exports.
Dr. Shahid Hassan Siddiqui (Economist): The policies of incumbent government are responsible for economic growth and creation of job opportunities in the country. All economic indicators are heading in the right direction with increase in remittances and foreign direct investment. The PTI government's prudent and timely policies have bolstered large-scale manufacturing and enhanced exports. Pakistan also witnessed an upward trend in foreign remittances and Foreign Direct Investment, indicating confidence of foreign investors on Pakistan’s economy. The government, under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, introduced smart lockdown policy to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, ensuring that the economy remained functional. That, in turn, allowed many businesses to reopen or continue operations on a limited scale to avert the adverse economic impact. The government also deserves appreciation for facilitating agriculture and construction sectors to accelerate economic recovery.
Dr. Khurram Iqbal (IR Expert): The US failed to manage the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan and is facing the consequences. It withdrew its forces in a shameful manner and even the European powers were not taken onboard. The establishment in US is finding it difficult to digest this defeat. US will face the consequences of its policy in Afghanistan. It should complement the regional efforts for peace and stability. Taliban would eventually show more flexibility in their dealings with the domestic issues. They are willing to accommodate the interests of all segments of the society. Taliban will have to make sure that Afghanistan is not used by the international terrorist organizations.
Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Naeem Khalid Lodhi (Defense Analyst): The US officials have started admitting their failures in Afghanistan. There was a difference in thinking of US military officials and civilian establishment. It is a good thing that they are reviewing their failures which is a lesson for others. Pakistan time and again warned the US of their flawed policies in Afghanistan but they did not pay attention to it. Americans failed to understand the traditions of Afghan society. In addition, the private contractors wanted to stay longer in Afghanistan for their business interests. And lastly, their attitude towards Afghans was of an occupation force which led to their failures.
