Analysts call for politically negotiated settlement of Afghan conflict
March 30, 2021

Abdullah Gul (Expert in Afghan Affairs): Regional peace is linked with peace in Afghanistan. It is pertinent to mention that Taliban want withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan as per the agreement done with Trump administration.  The Afghan issue must be settled now. The international community should understand the reality that there is no military solution to the Afghan conflict. Pakistan’s role in Afghan peace process cannot be denied. Pakistan supports Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process in Afghanistan. The U.S. should recognize Pakistan’s efforts in maintain peace in the region. Pakistan has paid a heavy price in war against terrorism. We sacrificed more than 70,000 lives and suffered more than 130 billion dollars in the war against terrorism.

Dr. Khurram Iqbal (Expert on International Relations): Heart of Asia Conference carries a huge significance for both Pakistan and Afghanistan as far as peace in Afghanistan is concerned. It is a matter of concern that many precious human lives have been lost due to violent incidents in Afghanistan in the past. Pakistan is ready to play its vital role for promoting peace in the neighbouring country.  Besides facilitating the peace process, Pakistan has also been extending all possible support to Afghanistan. Pakistan will continue its support an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace process for regional stability. There is no military solution to Afghan conflict and only politically negotiated settlement can promote peace in the war torn country.

Dr. Faisal Sultan (Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health): The current wave of coronavirus in the country is very serious and it is high time to strictly follow SOPs to avoid the pandemic.  Vaccination process to the elderly citizens of the country is in progress and we have placed further orders to purchase more vaccine. More vaccine will be available in April as well. Once again I urge and request the citizens to strictly follow SOPs and wear masks and play their role to overcome this pandemic. International community is acknowledging Pakistan’s efforts in fighting Covid-19.

Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar (Virologist): Coronavirus cases are spreading in the country due to negligence of our people. People have stopped following SOPs like social distancing, washing hands frequently, and avoiding crowded places. People around the world lack scientific literacy and are not able to understand the dangers associated with various viruses. Three variants including UK, African and Brazilian have fast transmission rate and are more dangerous.
