Shoaib Sultan Khan is one of the pioneers of rural development programmes in Pakistan. In recognition of his services, he received Sitara-e-Imtiaz ,Hilal-e-Imtiaz ,Nishan-e-Imtiaz and Sitara-e-Esar, United Nations Environment Programme Global 500 Award, The Ramon Magsaysay Award and the WWF Conservation Medal in 1994.

In 2009, Mr Shoaib Sultan Khan was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for "Unleashing the power and potential of the poor".
