Uzbekistan has announced a month-long state of emergency in autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan, where protests have forced President Shavkat Mirziyoyev into a reversal on certain constitutional reforms.

In a statement, the Press Secretary of the President said the step has been taken to ensure the safety of citizens, protect their rights and freedom and restore law and order in the territory.
