The United Nations has called for ending the shocking violence in Bangladesh and underscored the need for the government to cease targeting peaceful protesters.

In a statement, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk voiced deep concern over the situation, including a planned mass march on Dhaka.

He appealed political leadership to protect the right to life, and the freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.

He underscored the importance of accountability for human rights violations.
