Environmental experts call for using degradable plastic products

Environmental experts at a programme have stressed the need for using degradable plastic products to prevent environment from plastic litter.

The experts were speaking at a programme titled 'Beat plastic pollution' held at the office of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan in Hyderabad to mark World Environment Day.

On this occasion, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) deputy director technical and Hyderabad regional head Muneer Abbasi said that degradable plastic products should be used to control plastic litter which causes hazards to environment. He further said that the degradable plastic products could last from two to one week, while depending upon quality of additive.

Explaining his point, he said that Sindh Prohibition of Non-degradable Plastic Products (manufacturing, sale and usage) rules 2014 was made to ban non-degradable plastic products, including shopping bags, plastic packing of milk, bread, fertilizers and water.

He said that generally, people used non-degradable plastic shopping bags and its life could be over 400 years and this kind of plastic took a heavy toll on environment and aquatic life form.

He said that non-degradable plastic shopping bags block sewerage system, increase garbage and when they are burnt they create air pollution.

The coordinator HRCP Hyderabad task- force Dr Ashothama Lohana said that green laws and technology and green peace movements were being made and raised in the world as healthy environment was a fundamental human right.
