Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif says the government will spend a total of 377 billion rupees on solarisation of agriculture tubewells across the country.

In a tweet, he said as part of the government's revolutionary solarisation project of generating 10,000 MW to replace the costly thermal power, he has launched a programme for solarisation of one hundred thousand tubewells.

The Prime Minister said the solarisation of tube wells would provide cheap electricity to the farmers and boost domestic agricultural yield, leading to self-sufficiency in food production.

He said our economy cannot grow with high power tariffs and we have to replace the power plants operating on costlier fuel that burdens our people and results in circular debt.

He said the long-term solution lies in tapping our abundant solar and hydel energy resources.

Shehbaz Sharif said other than solar, nuclear and coal power projects, the outgoing coalition government, focused its attention on development of hydropower projects.

He said in this regard, Saudi Arabia has been offered to invest in the multipurpose Diamer-Bhasha Dam project.
