Judiciary committed to play role as per law, constitution: CJP

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Asif Saeed Khosa says the judiciary is committed to play its role as per the law and the constitution.

Addressing a ceremony marking new Judicial Year at Supreme Court in Islamabad on Wednesday, he said efforts are afoot to reduce the burden of pending cases.

The Chief Justice said model courts have been set up in 116 districts of the country for dispensation of instant and inexpensive justice. 

He said the number of military cases in Quetta and Karachi Registry of the Supreme Court has reached zero. He said the military cases in the Supreme Court Islamabad will also be disposed of in a few days.

The Chief Justice said a research center will be established at the Supreme Court.

Speaking on the occasion, the Attorney General said the incumbent Chief Justice kept the focus on the provision of speedy justice to masses. For this purpose, he said, model courts were established.    

The Attorney General said the model courts disposed of over sixteen thousand cases during the current year.

He said the International Court of Justice has also expressed its confidence in the judicial system of Pakistan.

Talking about Police Reforms, he said a Police Reforms Committee was constituted under the umbrella of Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan in the last judicial year. The Committee decided to set up Superintendent of Police (Complaints) office in every district of the country to address the grievances of general public.

The Chief Justice said, under the Expeditious Justice Initiative, Model Family Courts and Model Rent Courts are being established in every district of the country. He said under this initiative, Gender-based Violence Courts have also been established throughout the country and about one hundred judges of trial courts were imparted training in the field with the assistance of Asian Development Bank.

The Chief Justice said the Supreme Court has decided to introduce Artificial Intelligence system and active consultations are already afoot with different expert bodies in this regard.

He said the apex court started the E-Court system which is the first of its kind in the entire world.  He said this modern system has helped early disposal of cases.
