International Mountain Day observed

International Mountain Day was observed on Monday in all over the world, including Pakistan with the aim at raising awareness to improve the condition of mountains and populations living near mountains and to maintain their natural environment.

The United Nations General Assembly had adopted a resolution to observe International Mountain Day every year on 11th December 2001 to recognize the importance of mountains.

The theme of this year is ‘Restoring Mountain Ecosystems'.

Eight of the sixteen highest mountain peaks in the world are in Pakistan. There are five high snow peaks of 26 thousand feet in Pakistan while the world 2nd highest peak, K-2, and 9th highest peak Nanga Parbat is also located in Pakistan.
