Bangladesh to benefit from enhanced trade ties with Pakistan
March 12, 2025

Bangladesh stands to benefit from enhanced trade ties with Pakistan as Bangladeshi traders are optimistic about getting more competitive prices and a broader range of raw material sources.

This was highlighted in an article published in a Bangladeshi Newspaper "The Daily Star" today.

It states that trade dynamics are in favour of Pakistan currently, with Bangladesh importing cotton, yarn, fabrics, and essential commodities.

The article highlights the statement of President of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association Showkat Aziz Russell that Bangladeshi cotton traders and spinners were importing more cotton from Pakistan due to its competitive pricing.

The article quotes Bangladeshi Economist Chairman Mohammad Abdur Razzaque, highlighting that Bangladesh needs a reliable, competitive and diversified supply of key commodities, including food and energy, for future economic growth and Pakistan can be a valuable sourcing destination in this regard, increasing competition among supplying countries.

The economist said tariff and non-tariff barriers should be discussed and rationalized between the two governments.

Moreover, a boost in trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan can also enhance intra-regional commerce in South Asia.

The article points out Pakistan Business Council's analysis that Pakistan has an export potential of at least 2.95 billion dollars in Bangladesh, mainly in textiles, agriculture, foodstuffs, chemicals, base metals, plastics and cement products.
