Analyst says Pakistan needs to lower the cost of doing business
January 13, 2025

Dr Khaqan Najeeb (Economist): Pakistan needs to think on lowering the cost of doing business to increase quality and quantity of exports products. Currently we have import bill higher than our exports bill leading to ever widening current account deficit.  IMF has given us time to do some fundamental reforms in economic sector. So we can’t come out of International Monetary Fund (IMF) tread mill unless we focus on exports. We must also remove or withdraw import subsidies to encourage exports. We have a potential IT sector which has earned very healthy revenue. We have very good English speaking youth which India could not produce so far. Our service sector can also offer financial services to the world for having very capable human resources. Mines and mineral sector has also very good potential to boost our exports. We have also huge potential of blue economy for having vast and long coastal belts. We must also scrutinize the performance of the commercial attaches appointed abroad because we pay them from the taxpayers’ money
