Radio Pakistan a dynamic institution, adapts itself to meet modern day challenges: DG

Director General Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation Ambreen Jan has termed Radio Pakistan as an important, vibrant and active tool of fulfilling information, education and entertainment needs of the people around the country. 

She was speaking in a programme of the News and Current Affairs Channel of Radio Pakistan on Saturday evening on the occasion of World Radio Day, which is being celebrated today.

She said Radio Pakistan covers more than 60 percent population in the country and those areas which are not connected digitally. She expressed the confidence that radio provides the most credible and authentic information to its listeners and its role especially in natural disasters, calamities, including earthquakes and floods has been appreciated by all.

Replying to a question, Ambreen Jan said Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation is not a static organization, but a dynamic institution which is adapting itself to meet the changing requirements.

The Director General, on the occasion, informed that PBC is going to install a 1000-Kilowatt transmitter soon, which would help strengthen its signals and transmission.

She further said Radio Pakistan is taking steps to keep its relevance and in this connection it recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ministry of Education under which special programmes are being broadcast with the name of Radio School to impart education to out-of-school children across the country. 

Appreciating the active role of Radio Pakistan’s social media, she said PBC’s twitter account has over 0.75 million followers, while 2.56 million people actively follow its Facebook account. She said Radio Pakistan’s website is actively monitored and followed by all international media and other stakeholders due to its credibility and authenticity.

Ambreen Jan said Radio Pakistan broadcasts news and programmes in a number of national and international languages thorough its external and world services, as well as internet streaming. She said all efforts are being made to modernize the organization in line with international requirements. 

Meanwhile, to mark the World Radio Day, Radio Pakistan's News and Current Affairs Channel broadcast special day-long transmission in connection with the day. 

Talk shows, discussions, features, special reports and impressions of people from different walks of life were part of transmission.

The News and Current Affairs Channel arranged two special shows from 0810 to 1000 hours and 1605 to 1800 hours, in which veteran broadcasters participated and shared experiences of their professional life. They included DG Radio Pakistan Ambreen Jan, renowned poet Anwar Masood, TV artist Laila Zuberi, Film Director Syed Noor and veteran broadcaster Javed Jabbar among others.

Radio is an important source of mass communication in the present era, which remains vital during war, peace, and catastrophe and pandemic.

Proclaimed in 2011 by the Member States of UNESCO, and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day, February 13 became World Radio Day (WRD).

Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium.
