Pakistan calls for stronger multilateral institutions to address global challenges
July 15, 2026

Pakistan has called for stronger, more representative and equitable multilateral institutions to address global challenges.

Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad laid this emphasis while speaking at the Informal Meeting of the UN General Assembly on "Taking Stock of the Pact for the Future - Ministerial Roundtable Two: Making Multilateralism Fit for the Future."

He stressed that a revitalized General Assembly is central to a revitalized United Nations, emphasizing its Charter-mandated role in maintaining international peace and security alongside the Security Council. He also highlighted the Assembly's growing importance in addressing emerging global challenges, including artificial intelligence, outer space and the global commons.

On reforming the international financial architecture, Asim Iftikhar called for a more equitable and democratic global economic governance system, with expanded access to concessional financing, meaningful debt relief and effective implementation of the Sevilla Commitments.
