Pakistan opposes more permanent seats in UNSC
April 16, 2025

Pakistan has once again opposed creation of additional permanent seats in the UN Security Council (UNSC).

During 4th Informal Meeting of Intergovernmental Negotiations on the Question of Equitable Representation on and Increase in the Membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Council, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan Ambassador Usman Iqbal Jadoon said there is no justification for creating new centers of privilege within the UN.

He said our goal is to democratize the Council and support a reform that corresponds to the interests of the large majority of member states and regional and cross-regional groups, not just a few self-appointed states.

Usman Iqbal Jadoon said Pakistan believes that the proposal by the United for Consensus (UfC) for creation of more non-permanent members, with equitable geographical representation, elected to ensure accountability, is the best option.
