The London-based international human rights watchdog, Amnesty International has highlighted the shrinking space for freedom of expression in India.

In its latest report, it said that Indian authorities repressed dissent through unlawful restrictions on peaceful protestors and by silencing critics.

The report pointed out widespread impunity and lack of accountability for murders and attacks carried out by vigilante mobs and police officers against Indian religious minorities.

It said swift and extreme restrictions were placed on freedom of movement during Covid-19 pandemic, leaving thousands of migrant workers stranded without adequate food and protection.

The report also highlighted the clampdown on civil liberties and restrictions on communications services continued in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The report cited a number of cases of killings, enforced disappearances by government and non-government sources in the held territory.
