Russia is aiming to break through Ukrainian defences in the northeastern areas after a sharp increase in fighting.

While meeting troops at an undisclosed location, the Commander of Ukraine' ground forces, General Oleksandr Syrskyi said fighting in Kupiansk-Lyman areas has significantly escalated.

Acknowledging intense military activity in the area, Russia's Defence Ministry said Russian troops have repelled ten Ukrainian attacks in Kupiansk and two more in adjacent Lyman area.
