UN adopts resolution demanding Israel to end unlawful presence in Palestine
September 18, 2024

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution that demands Israel to end its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian territory within 12 months.

The resolution, which was presented by Palestine and cosponsored by Pakistan and several other countries, mustered 124 votes in favour, while 43 countries abstained, and Israel, the United States and 12 others voted no.

The resolution also called on Israel to make reparations to Palestinians for damages incurred by the occupation.

The UNGA, whose mission includes promoting “respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms”, includes every sovereign country in the world, so today’s vote underscores the depth of the international opposition to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

The resolution backed an advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice, the UN’s top court, which found that Israel’s presence in the Palestinian territories is unlawful and must end.
