Dr. Muhammad Khan (IR Expert): It is great positive development thatPakistan, Maldives have reiterated resolve to strengthen bilateral cooperation in diverse sectors. Actually, Maldives is a small country and has positive sentiments towards Muslims especially Pakistan. Unfortunately, Maldives had been under Indian influence; however, the current Maldivian regime has changed the total orientation of Maldivian foreign policy. Now Maldives is looking towards Pakistan for economic, diplomatic and strategic support. Pakistani and Maldivian leadership have committed to enhance bilateral trade tune and economic cooperation. It is going to be a landmark achievement for Pakistan and Maldives as both countries can benefit from each other’s economic and trade potentials. Now they can work together at a wider scale for South Asian economic integration and unification. Maldives has also a strategic significance in the Indian Ocean. Indians used to subjugate Maldives in the past but now Maldivian independence is ensured by sitting Maldivian leadership. Pakistan has great potential to support and ensure Maldives’ naval sovereignty. Pakistan can also offer defence and strategic support to Maldives against foreign influence especially Indian exploitation. Apart from trade and economic cooperation, Pakistan and Maldives can also have enhanced cooperation in defence and defence production in collaboration with China.
