Mansoor Ahmad Khan (Former Ambassador): The US actions on Afghanistan are significant for regional peace and order. The US and Taliban used to hold talks for prisoners’ swap release even before Taliban had not gained power in Afghanistan. But this issue has not been fully resolved so far as all the detainees have not been released. Moreover, Taliban have not fulfilled their commitments made in Doha agreement and taken no action against terror outfits operating from Afghan soil. Now Trump administration has taken a bold stance and threatened to freeze financial aid. Therefore, Afghan Taliban will have to cooperate with the international community on these issues. The western countries which are mainly allies to the US and they follow the US position on Afghanistan. Therefore Western countries have not recognized the Afghan government even after withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan just because of various reasons. Taliban have not formed inclusive government, denied women rights and been non cooperative with Pakistan and Western Countries against terrorism. The US has also conveyed these messages to Afghan government directly because both are engaged on a number of forums. The US is taking hard stance on Afghanistan issue due looming threats of terrorism from Afghan soil for neighbouring countries. The future of ties between the US and Pakistan depends on economic and political situation in Pakistan. The US is one of the biggest investors in the world therefore Pakistan needs to revamp its investment structure through reforms in political and economic sectors.
