MEPs, HR groups protest on Afghan Taliban visit to Belgium
June 27, 2026

The members of the European Parliament and human rights organizations have strongly protested over the Afghan Taliban's visit to Belgium and its meetings with the EU officials in Brussels.

Member of the European Parliament, Hannah Neumann, on a social media post, strongly criticized the European Commission for hosting and holding negotiations with the Afghan Taliban.

She said Afghan Taliban do not want technical talks with the European Union, rather they want their political status to be recognized.

Head of the European Parliament's Afghan Committee, Rochelle Garcia, also strongly criticized the European Commission, and apologized to the Afghan people on behalf of four hundred fifty million European citizens that the European Parliament failed to stop this madness of the so-called negotiations.

She said such negotiations could be a mean of providing global acceptance to the oppressive Afghan regime.

The International Federation for Human Rights has approached the Belgian Federal Prosecutor, demanding the arrest of the Afghan Taliban delegation on the European soil.

According to Alexis Deswaef, President of the International Federation for Human Rights, negotiating with the Afghan Taliban on European Union soil provides political legitimacy to an oppressive regime.

Farishta Abbasi, a researcher of the Human Rights Watch, in a statement to the international journal Al Jazeera, said while the European Union condemns the atrocities of the Afghan Taliban, and on the other hand, it is tarnishing its reputation by maintaining ties with them.

According to experts of the international affairs, Afghan Taliban should be held accountable to the International Court of Justice instead of Brussels.  They said negotiating with Afghan Taliban will encourage them for adopting more strict policies in the future.
