June 29, 2026

A seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty will be held in Islamabad tomorrow to highlight Pakistan's water rights under the treaty.

This was announced by Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, while addressing a news conference in Islamabad today along with Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik.

The Minister said the seminar will deliberate on various aspects of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Attaullah Tarar said the seminar will be attended by water and legal experts. He said several foreign delegates have already arrived in the country to participate in the first international seminar of its kind on the treaty.

The Information Minister said the international community acknowledges and endorses Pakistan's position on the Indus Waters Treaty, describing it as a significant success for Pakistan in the narrative domain.

He emphasized that the treaty cannot be unilaterally revoked or amended.

Reaffirming Pakistan's resolve to safeguard its water rights, he said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir have declared that water is Pakistan's lifeline and its red line.

Attaullah Tarar said the government is also paying special attention to forest protection and nationwide tree plantation initiatives.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik said Pakistan has consistently raised the matter of the Indus Waters Treaty at international forums, including the United Nations. He said the Court of Arbitration has also upheld Pakistan's position on the treaty.

Musadik Malik reiterated Pakistan's unwavering commitment to protecting its water rights under the treaty, asserting that India will not be allowed to obstruct the flow of water to Pakistan.

He said the seminar will underscore the fundamental rights of lower riparian countries, with experts examining the legal and technical dimensions of the Indus Waters Treaty in detail.

Responding to a question, Musadik Malik said the major portion of the development budget has been allocated to water-related projects. He said the government is committed to accelerating the implementation of these projects and increasing funding for the water sector.
